Take the relationship testLove Personality 053: Motivation and Capacity for Change — Understanding the Psychology of Behavioral Transformation
Introduction
A huge chasm lies between I want to change and I have truly changed. Behavioral change psychology (such as the Transtheoretical Model, Motivational Interviewing) provides frameworks for understanding this chasm and how to cross it.
Section 1: Stages of Change
The Transtheoretical Model divides change into stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance. Partners are often at different stages — one may be ready for action while the other is still in precontemplation.
Section 2: Motivation for Change
Motivation divides into intrinsic and extrinsic. Research shows intrinsically motivated change is more durable than extrinsically motivated change.
Section 3: Capacity for Change
Wanting to change and being able to change are different. Change capacity involves: skills (do you know how?), self-efficacy (do you believe you can?), environmental support (does your environment support this change?).
